Definition
“Direct support professional” (DSP) means an individual who:
(a) Provides services to a participant in accordance with Section 4 of the MP regulations
(b) Has direct contact with a participant when providing services to the participant;
Requirements
• Eighteen (18) years old and has a high school diploma or GED or is Twenty-one (21) years old
• Meets the personnel and training requirements established in Section 3 of the SCL regulations
• Has the ability to:
- Communicate effectively with a participant and the participant’s family
- Read, understand, and implement written and oral instructions
- Perform required documentation
- Participate as a member of the participant’s person-centered team if requested by the participant; and
- Demonstrates competence and knowledge on topics required to safely support the participant as described in the participant’s person-centered service plan.
- Must be provided by direct care staff who provide services at a level that appropriately and safely meets the medical needs of the participant;
Job Description
DSP’s will ensure the following regulations and job descriptions are followed:
• Providing regularly scheduled activities in a non-residential setting that are designed to foster the acquisition of skills, build positive social behavior and interpersonal competence, and foster greater independence and personal choice.
• Career planning or pre-vocational activities to develop experiential learning opportunities and career options consistent with the participant’s skills and interests that:
- Are person-centered and designed to support employment related goals;
- Provide active training designed to prepare a participant to transition from school to adult responsibilities, community integration, and work;
- Enable each individual to attain the highest level of work in the most integrated setting with the job matched to the participant’s interests, strengths, priorities, abilities, and capabilities; and Include:
▪ Skill development to communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and
customers;
▪ Generally accepted community workplace conduct and dress;
▪ Workplace problem solving skills and strategies;
▪ General workplace safety;
▪ The ability to follow directions;
▪ The ability to attend tasks; or
▪ Mobility training;
• Supported retirement activities including:
- Altering schedules to allow for more rest time throughout the day; or
- Support to participate in hobbies, clubs, or other activities in the participant’s community; or
• Training and supports designed to maintain skills and functioning and to prevent or slow
regression, rather than acquiring new skills or improving existing skills;
• Provide and environment that is not diversional in nature and that occur in a variety of settings
in the community and shall not be limited to fixed-site facilities;
• Keeping the Day training facility clean and sanitary at all times
• Administering medications as needed
• Participating in team meetings when needed
• Providing transportation to increase participants social presence and skills
DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENT

• Beginning and Ending Time
• Date of Service
• Location of Service (not specific address)
• Name, title, signature and signature date of the
individual attesting to the attendance
Monthly Summary:
• The monthly summary for direct service providers follows the calendar month, must be inclusive of all service dates within the calendar month, and must be written and available to audit/review teams within 10 business days following the last day of the month.
• The monthly summary must contain a description of progress toward the participant’s outcome(s) as noted by the pertinent waiver requirements.
• Provide information including; but not limited, to daily events/involvement in the community, concerns, patterns, trends, and unusual occurrences during the month that had an impact on the participant’s quality of life.
• Month and year for the time period the note covers
• Name, date, title and signature of the person completing the summary
MOST IMPORTANTLY ALL STAFF WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MONITORING AND ENSURING THE HEALTH, SAFTEY, WELFARE, INTERGITY, PRIVACY, AND THE RIGHTS OF ALL PARTICIPANTS
